Inner Child Healing

Understand the patterns. Open the door to new possibilities.

Sometimes the way we think, feel and react today has roots much further back than we realise.

Perhaps certain situations trigger a much stronger reaction than seems logical. Perhaps you struggle with confidence, people pleasing, relationships, boundaries or feeling that you are never quite good enough. Or perhaps you keep repeating the same patterns even though you genuinely want things to be different.

Inner child healing can help you understand where those patterns began and how they may still be affecting you today.

You cannot change what happened, but you can change what happens next.

What is the inner child?

Your inner child isn't a separate part of you. It is a way of describing the memories, beliefs, emotions and patterns shaped by your childhood experiences.

Some may come from significant events, others through repeated experiences or seemingly small moments.

Perhaps you learned that you needed to:

  • keep everyone else happy

  • stay out of the way

  • be perfect

  • work hard to be noticed

  • hide how you felt

  • take responsibility for other people

  • avoid conflict

  • prove that you were good enough

These ways of coping may once have helped you navigate the world around you. The problem is that we can continue using them long after we need them.

I know this because I've lived it.

How childhood patterns can show up in adult life

You don't need to have experienced an obviously difficult childhood to benefit from inner child work.

As an adult, old beliefs and patterns can show up with low confidence, people pleasing, difficulty saying no, fear of rejection, perfectionism, self-criticism, relationship difficulties or a sense of feeling stuck despite understanding the problem.

Sometimes you know exactly where a pattern came from. Sometimes you don't.

And you don't have to remember everything or analyse every part of your childhood for change to happen.

What does inner child healing involve?

Inner child healing focuses on recognising the beliefs and emotional patterns formed earlier in life and changing the way they influence you now.

My work brings together hypnotherapy, Heal Your Life® principles and many years’ experience in wellbeing and inner child healing. I have also written on the subject, and train other hypnotherapists to integrate this work into their own practice.

Depending on what is right for you, your sessions may include imagery and visualisation, exploring beliefs and patterns, self-compassion, reparenting techniques and other approaches that can help you move beyond automatic reactions.

There is no standard script and no expectation that you should experience anything in a particular way. We work with what is relevant to you.

You don't have to keep repeating the same story

The beliefs you learned growing up can become deeply embedded, but that doesn't make them true.

As an adult, you can begin to see them differently, make different choices and create new possibilities for yourself.

Could inner child healing help you?

It's worth exploring if you find yourself thinking, or even saying something like:

"I know why I do it, but I still can't stop."

"I've always been like this."

"Why do I keep ending up in the same situation?"

"I've tried everything and nothing seems to work."

Sometimes the missing piece isn't just another strategy for managing what’s happening now. It’s understanding what has been influencing it all along.

Finding the right support for you

You don't need to decide for yourself whether inner child healing is the right approach.

Tell me what's happening, what you've already tried and what you would like to change. We can talk about whether this type of work could be helpful and what approach might suit you best.
